🚨 BREAKING NEWS: Important updates for Mexican citizens traveling to Canada 🚨

Updated: Apr 10

Government of Canada Announces Groundbreaking Amendments to Visa Requirements for Mexican Citizens

In a significant development, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has unveiled crucial updates to visa requirements for Mexican citizens, effective from February 29, 2024, at 11:30pm EST. These changes mark a pivotal moment in streamlining entry processes for Mexican travelers to Canada.

The Electronic Travel Autorization (eTA) is for air travel only.

All eTAs issued to Mexican passports before 11:30 p.m. Eastern time on February 29, 2024, will no longer be valid—except for eTAs linked to Mexican passports with a valid Canadian work or study permit. Mexican citizens travelling to Canada without a valid work or study permit will need to apply for a visitor visa or reapply for a new eTA—if they are eligible.

Key Points of the Announcement:

1. Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) Updates:

  • The existing eTA issued to Mexican passports on December 23, 2019, will cease to be valid after 11:30 p.m. EST on February 29, 2024.

  • Mexican citizens holding a valid US non-immigrant visa or those who have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years can apply for a new eTA when traveling by air on a Mexican passport.

2. Visa Application Requirement:

  • Travelers not meeting the new eTA criteria will need to apply for a Canadian visitor visa. The processing time from Mexico is currently 40 days. As part of the visitor visa application, applicants must provide their biometrics.

3. Impact on Asylum Claims:

  • The changes respond to a surge in asylum claims by Mexican citizens, a majority of which were rejected, withdrawn, or abandoned.

  • This adjustment is crucial to preserving mobility for hundreds of thousands of Mexican citizens while ensuring the robust management of Canada's immigration and asylum systems.

4. Continued Opportunities for Workers and Students:

  • The application process for Mexican citizens seeking work or study permits will remain unchanged.

  • Access to existing labor pathways, including the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and the International Mobility Program, will continue for those seeking employment in Canada.

5. Travel with Existing eTA for Work or Study Permit Holders:

  • Mexican citizens holding a valid work or study permit can still travel by air to Canada with their existing eTA as long as it remains valid.

  • They can continue to study or work in Canada based on the validity and conditions of their permit.

  • Visitors already in Canada on an eTA can stay for up to six months from the date of arrival. However, if they plan to leave and return, they must ensure they have the proper travel documents (visa or new eTA).

Additional Insights and Statistics:

  • Asylum claims by Mexican citizens in 2023 reached a record high, constituting approximately 17% of all claims globally.

  • The eTA changes aim to alleviate pressure on Canada’s borders, immigration system, housing, and social services.

  • Canada is expanding its network of visa application centers in Mexico to better serve clients.

Looking Ahead:

The Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) will see enhancements through the modernization of a new bilateral agreement, offering Mexican workers opportunities in year-round primary agriculture and seasonal fish, seafood, and primary food processing.
